Endangered languages and local
knowledge: Visual materials from a seminar at the Foundation for
Siberian Cultures, October 2-6, 2011
In many parts of Siberia, the effective transmission within the family
of indigenous traditional knowledge and of the peoples' own languages
was prevented or made more difficult under Soviet and Russian education
policies. Today, indigenous communities are concerned about this loss
of their cultural heritage. In collaboration with foreign partners,
they are developing new pedagogical concepts and modern learning tools
that focus on and incorporate their own traditional ways of
learning.
The sample videos that are shown here are part of a forthcoming DVD.
They illustrate the problems of conventional learning methods, but also
point the way towards fruitful future efforts.
