"250 years of German-Russian research on the nature of Kamtchatka
and the cultures of its indigenous peoples"
From July 2010, our exhibition "250 years of German-Russian research on
the nature of Kamchatka and the cultures of its indigenous peoples" is
shown in Kamchatka. Next year it will travel to other parts of Russia,
and a comprehensive version in German language will be shown in Estonia
and Germany in 2012.
The edited volume (in Russian language) contains articles of historians
and cultural anthropologists from various countries. For the first time
the impressive paintings of Friedrich Heinrich Freiherr von Kittlitz
are published and presented in an exhibition to a broader public.
The exhibition shall call to mind the long-lasting tradition of
scientific German-Russian relations in the exploration of Kamchatka,
and how this tradition has been renewed since the mid-1990s and is
carried on through joint German-Russian research on the ecology and the
cultures of Kamchatka. It is striking how these earlier accounts of
German scientists reflect – quite unusual for those times – respect and
understanding for the way of life of the indigenous peoples and
the concern about the preservation of their endangered cultural
heritage.
Clips from Russian TV broadcastings provide a short overview on the
exhibition.
